Summer at SCS

Summer at SCS is filled with continued learning opportunities for our students inside and outside of our program. In June, seven of our students participated in Chatham University’s three-week long Music and Arts Day Camp. Chatham, a long time partner of SCS, awarded these students full scholarships to participate in the camp. Leading up to the start of the three weeks, students chose courses from an extensive list of options, which included classes like ceramics, autobiographical creative writing, song writing, poetry, digital art, and musical theatre, to name a few. Each day they navigated the Chatham campus, moving from class to class, and getting a little taste of what college life will be like in the future.

Beginning July 15, Steel City Squash will host our three-week long Summer Discovery Program that seeks to engage students in physical activity, provide them with academic enrichment during the off season, and continue to develop their squash abilities. During the program, students spend half the day with SCS and half the day with Pitt’s Kids where they are able to interact with students outside of our program and participate in additional activities such as swimming, taekwondo, and rock climbing. We have 35 students enrolled this summer and 15 are new to our program!

On the squash front, we were thrilled that three of our rising 10th grade students were chosen to participate in SEA’s Summer Squads. These squads bring together elite urban squash players from around the country for 4 days of intensive training with some experienced coaches from both inside and outside the urban squash community. Vaughn will be attending the Summer Squad at Deerfield Academy, Keyel with be attending both the Deerfield Squad as well as the Squad at the University of Virginia, and Mikayla will be traveling out to California for the Summer Squad at Stanford University.

To close out this busy summer for SCS, we will be taking six students to Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio to participate in this year’s Midwest Championships, hosted by SEA.
